Island 3: Infectious & Contagious Disease Wards

After the Main Hospital opened on Island 2 in 1902, Ellis Island was once again expanded to make room for the Contagious Disease Hospital and Isolation Wards, also referred to as Island 3. Immigrants diagnosis with trachoma, favus, measles, and other illness were sent here for treatment. This third island was made up of 17 connected pavilions, each that could be sealed to prevent the spread of disease.
